1. Raw Material of Round Billet
The process begins with the selection of high-quality round billets, which are typically made from carbon steel or alloy steel. These billets serve as the primary raw material for producing seamless pipes.
2. Hot Piercing
The round billets are heated to a high temperature (usually above 1000°C) and then subjected to a piercing process. This involves using a piercing mill to create a hollow tube by forcing a mandrel through the heated billet, forming the initial pipe shape.
3. Cooling After Hot Piercing
After the hot piercing process, the newly formed hollow tube is cooled down. This cooling can be done using air or water, depending on the desired properties of the material.
4. Lubrication for Surface Cleaning
Before further processing, the surface of the pipe is lubricated to facilitate subsequent operations and to remove any oxides or impurities that may have formed during the hot piercing.
5. Pickling for Surface Cleaning
The lubricated pipes undergo a pickling process, where they are immersed in a solution of acids (usually hydrochloric or sulfuric acid) to remove scale, rust, and other contaminants from the surface, ensuring a clean substrate for further processing.
6. Cold Drawing Production Line
The cleaned pipes are then sent to a cold drawing production line. In this stage, the pipes are drawn through a die to reduce their diameter and increase their length, enhancing their mechanical properties.
7. Cold Rolling Production Line
Alternatively, some pipes may undergo cold rolling, where they are rolled to achieve the desired thickness and diameter. This process also improves the mechanical properties of the steel.
8. Cold Drawn Production Line
In the cold drawn production line, the pipes are subjected to further drawing processes to achieve precise dimensions and improved surface finish. This step is crucial for meeting specific industry standards.
9. Heat Treatment NBK (Normalized and Tempered)
The pipes are then subjected to a heat treatment process known as Normalized and Tempered (NBK). This involves heating the pipes to a specific temperature and then cooling them in air to relieve internal stresses and improve toughness.
10. Heat Treatment Normalized
In this step, the pipes are normalized by heating them to a temperature above their transformation range and then allowing them to cool in still air. This process refines the grain structure and enhances mechanical properties.
11. Straightening
After heat treatment, the pipes may have some residual curvature. They are straightened using a straightening machine to ensure they meet the required specifications for straightness.
12. Eddy Current Test
An eddy current test is performed to detect any surface defects in the pipes. This non-destructive testing method uses electromagnetic induction to identify flaws without damaging the material.
13. Ultrasonic Test
Following the eddy current test, an ultrasonic test is conducted to detect internal defects. High-frequency sound waves are transmitted through the pipe, and any reflections indicate the presence of flaws.
14. Cutting
Once the pipes have passed all quality tests, they are cut to the desired lengths using cutting machines. This ensures that the final product meets customer specifications.
15. Finished Product Display
Finally, the seamless steel pipes are displayed as finished products. They are often marked with relevant information, such as size, grade, and heat number, before being packaged for shipment.
