2205 duplex stainless steel is a composite alloy composed of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 4.5% nickel-nitrogen. This duplex steel is particularly well-suited for applications within the temperature range of -50°F to +600°F.
Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe exhibits excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, making it ideal for applications such as seawater cooling systems and ballast tanks on offshore platforms.
The yield strength of 2205 duplex stainless steel reaches 400–550 MPa-twice that of standard austenitic stainless steel. Under identical design pressures and operating conditions on offshore platforms, the use of 2205 stainless steel allows for a significant reduction in pipe weight and material consumption; this makes it highly suitable for installation scenarios on offshore platforms that present logistical challenges, such as those involving high-altitude or deep-sea environments.

Possible Alternative Grades
- For extreme marine environments, S32750 super duplex stainless steel-characterized by a PREN of ≥ 40–45-is a suitable choice, offering high resistance to chlorides and being applicable for operating temperatures of approximately 300°C.
- For operating environments with chloride levels below 1,000 ppm, S32304 duplex stainless steel is a viable option; it is cost-effective and offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 304L.
- For extreme corrosive environments involving higher operating temperatures, nickel-based alloys such as Alloy 625 are recommended, as they can withstand high-temperature conditions exceeding 600°C.
