Welded Stainless Steel Pipe

Welded Stainless Steel Pipe

The welded stainless steel pipe is manufactured in strict accordance with the ASTM A249 standard specification. Fabricated from high-quality stainless steel grades—such as 316, 316L, and 310—they offer a range of advantages, including resistance to sewage corrosion, biofouling, high temperatures, and sulfidation, as well as ease of cleaning. Consequently, they are ideally suited for use in heat exchangers and boiler systems within the field of wastewater treatment.

Wastewater is highly corrosive; however, the surface of austenitic stainless steel is capable of forming a dense Cr₂O₃ oxide film, which endows it with excellent corrosion resistance, as well as good plasticity and toughness. Consequently, it can effectively withstand the chlorinated wastewater, acidic and alkaline waste liquids, and other aggressive media encountered during wastewater treatment processes.

Welded stainless steel pipe demonstrates excellent compatibility during equipment maintenance and welding operations, where manual shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is the standard construction method. The core welding parameters offer a high degree of controllability; specifically, the welding current is lower than that required for carbon steel (typically 90–110 A for a 3.2 mm electrode), and the interpass temperature can be reliably maintained below 150°C. Welding is performed using a rapid, short-arc technique; post-weld, only cold straightening is required to correct any deformation, making the welding process both convenient and capable of producing consistent, high-quality weld profiles.

Possible Alternative Grades

  1. For wastewater treatment applications involving relatively low corrosivity-such as standard municipal sewage-TP304 may be selected as an alternative to TP316L. This choice offers lower costs, superior processing characteristics, and reduced welding difficulty, making it suitable for bulk procurement and use in conventional operating environments.
  2. For applications involving seawater or highly corrosive wastewater within the chemical industry, materials such as S32205 or 2507 are recommended; these grades possess strong resistance to intergranular corrosion and demonstrate excellent high-temperature performance.
  3. For wastewater characterized by high acidity or extreme chemical corrosivity, 904L is the recommended choice.

FAQ

Q: Can welded tubes withstand corrosive wastewater environments?

A: Yes. TIG welded seams, plus pickling and passivation, provide strong corrosion resistance. Quality is ensured via eddy current, hydrostatic, and IGC testing.

Q: How to handle scaling in pipelines?

A: Use high-pressure water flushing (1.0–1.5 MPa) with neutral cleaner. For heavy scaling, apply citric acid cleaning, then thoroughly rinse to prevent corrosion.

Q: What operating conditions are ASTM A249 tubes suitable for?

A: Suitable for heat exchangers and boilers in moderate to high temperatures, corrosive wastewater/chemical media, and wet–dry cycling environments.
