Why Choose Hastelloy C276 for Chemical Processing?

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is used in chemical processing where stainless steels may be limited by aggressive acids, chlorides or mixed process streams. Its composition contains about 16% Mo, 16% Cr and 4% W, with C ≤0.01% and Si ≤0.08%, helping resist pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking while maintaining corrosion resistance after welding.

Data shows C276 can achieve corrosion rates below 0.1 mm/year within defined hydrochloric-acid concentration and temperature ranges. Weld-metal tests in 10–15% HCl at 38°C reported corrosion rates of about 0.20–0.22 mm/year.

These characteristics make ASTM B622 Hastelloy C276 tube suitable for chemical heat exchangers, reactors, acid transfer lines and process piping where corrosion stability and weld reliability are critical.

Customized Services

1.Custom Tube Dimensions
TORICH offers a wide range of specifications for outside diameters, wall thicknesses, and dimensional tolerances. Requests for special dimensions can be evaluated based on drawings or technical specifications. Fixed lengths (e.g., 3m, 6m, 12m) or project-specific lengths are available to minimize on-site cutting and material waste.

2. Cutting and End Processing
Services include custom cutting, deburring, chamfering, beveling, and end finishing to meet requirements for welding, assembly, and process piping installation.

3. Bending and U-Bend Fabrication
Bending and U-bend fabrication (suitable for heat exchangers, condensers, and process equipment) can be provided based on drawing requirements, subject to evaluation of tube dimensions and minimum bending radii.

4. Surface Treatment and Cleaning
Services such as pickling, polishing, degreasing, and controlled surface cleaning are available to meet specific chemical service conditions.

5. Inspection and Documentation
PMI (Positive Material Identification), dimensional inspection, eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing, and hydrostatic testing can be provided in accordance with purchase order requirements. EN 10204 3.1 material certificates and inspection reports are supplied.

Possible Alternative Grades

  1. 316L is suitable for chemical processing environments with relatively mild corrosivity. While its raw material cost is significantly lower than that of C276, it offers limited resistance to hydrochloric acid, high-chloride media, and localized corrosion.
  2. The material cost of Inconel 625 is generally lower than or comparable to that of C276. Combining high mechanical strength with excellent resistance to chloride and seawater corrosion, it is suitable for applications requiring a balance between strength and corrosion resistance.
  3. C22 is a suitable choice when process media contain strong oxidizing impurities and the material must withstand both oxidizing and reducing environments. Its cost is essentially on par with that of C276.

application areas

1. Chemical heat exchangers: Widely used in shell-and-tube heat exchangers, condensers, coolers, and reboilers handling highly corrosive chemical media.

2. Reactors and process vessels: Used for reactor feed lines, internal circulation lines, sampling systems, and connecting piping around process vessels.

3. Acid transfer and process piping: Used to transport corrosive process fluids between reactors, storage tanks, and downstream equipment.

4. Scrubbers and gas treatment systems: Used in wet scrubbers, absorption systems, and chemical gas treatment units exposed to acidic condensates or chloride-containing liquids.

5. Distillation and separation equipment: Used for columns, condensers, reboilers, sampling lines, and transfer systems within chemical separation processes.

6. Chemical waste and wastewater treatment: Used in chemical waste treatment and recovery systems handling highly corrosive or chemically complex process liquids.

FAQ

Q: Is Hastelloy C276 Tube suitable for hydrochloric acid environments?

A: C276 offers excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid environments; however, its corrosion resistance depends heavily on acid concentration, operating temperature, and impurity levels. Actual process conditions should be evaluated before making a final material selection.

Q: Can Hastelloy C276 be used in solutions containing chloride ions?

A: Yes. One of the key advantages of C276 is its exceptional resistance to chloride-induced localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.

Q: What is the difference between Hastelloy C276 and 316L?

A: 316L is more cost-effective and suitable for many mildly corrosive environments. C276 is typically considered when the process involves more aggressive acids, higher chloride levels, mixed chemical media, or a high risk of localized corrosion.

Q: Can TORICH supply Hastelloy C276 tubing for heat exchangers?

A: Yes. We can evaluate requirements-such as custom diameters, fixed lengths, surface finishes, non-destructive testing (NDT), and U-bending-based on your heat exchanger drawings and technical specifications.

Q: What is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for Hastelloy C276 tubing?

A: The MOQ depends on the outer diameter, wall thickness, tube length, material stock availability, and processing requirements.
