Inconel 718 Tubing

Inconel 718 Tubing

Inconel 718 tubing is a seamless nickel-alloy tube manufactured in accordance with the SAE AMS 5589 standard. Characterized by ultra-high strength, exceptional creep resistance, and excellent corrosion resistance, it is widely used in high-end aerospace and aircraft engine applications, such as fuel and hydraulic lines for aero-engines, turbine cooling systems, high-temperature structural fluid components, and core piping for aviation gas turbines.

Inconel 718 tubing operates reliably across a temperature range from cryogenic levels (-253°C) to high temperatures (704°C), with an oxidation resistance limit of 982°C, making it ideally suited for the fluctuating thermal conditions found in aero-engines.

With its high nickel and chromium content, Inconel 718 offers superior resistance to pitting and intergranular corrosion-outperforming martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steels like 17-4PH-when exposed to sulfur-bearing gases from jet fuel combustion and marine salt-spray environments.

Customized Services

  1. TORICH offers aerospace-grade high-purity pickling and passivation, bright annealing, and precision polishing of both inner and outer surfaces to enhance the smoothness of the tube's internal wall.
  2. We support processes such as bending, flaring, swaging, end beveling, and forming, and can customize various specialized aerospace tubing assemblies.
  3. Solution treatment temperatures can be adjusted based on service conditions (with precise control within the 941–996°C range), and hardness specifications can be tailored to requirements (standard ≤40 HRC; hardening treatments available for high-strength applications).

Possible Alternative Grades

  1. Inconel 625 is the most common alternative to Inconel 718; although it has lower tensile strength, it offers superior corrosion resistance and lower cost, making it suitable for cryogenic fluid piping and non-critical cooling systems in aerospace applications.
  2. For aerospace piping systems transporting highly corrosive media, Hastelloy C276 is an option; it provides excellent corrosion resistance but comes at a higher cost than Inconel 718.
  3. For combustion zone components and gas turbine parts requiring high oxidation resistance at temperatures above 700°C, Hastelloy X (UNS N06002) is a suitable choice.

application areas

  1. Aircraft engine systems: engine fuel delivery lines, fuel manifolds, hydraulic control lines, etc.
  2. Aerospace hydraulic systems: flight control hydraulic lines, actuator control piping, etc.
  3. Gas turbine applications: turbine instrumentation piping, compressor monitoring lines, etc.

FAQ

Q: What are the key differences between SAE AMS 5589 and AMS 5590 Inconel 718 tubing?

A: AMS 5589 covers seamless tubing in the solution-annealed condition, offering excellent weldability and formability suitable for tube bending and welded assemblies; AMS 5590 covers tubing in the precipitation-hardened condition, which offers higher hardness and strength but reduced formability.

Q: What is the product delivery condition? Is additional heat treatment by the customer required?

A: The standard delivery condition is solution-annealed, descaled, and clean (free of oil/grease). The material meets all performance specifications, so no further heat treatment is required for standard applications; the tubing is ready for immediate machining and assembly.

Q: Do you supply finished tube assemblies with end fittings?

A: Yes, we provide tube-end forming services based on customer drawings, including 37-degree flaring, ISO 6149 fitting pre-assembly, spherical seal machining, and welding of threaded adapters.
