Inconel 600 is a solid-solution-strengthened alloy-specifically a nickel-chromium-iron corrosion-resistant alloy-characterized by excellent resistance to high-temperature corrosion (including resistance to acids and alkalis), superior oxidation resistance, and excellent processability for both cold and hot working, as well as welding.
Inconel 600 pipe exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance; it demonstrates strong tolerance to nitric acid, caustic alkalis (such as NaOH), and sulfide-rich environments, and is capable of withstanding corrosion from dry chlorine gas, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen fluoride gases.
Inconel 600 is designed for operating temperatures exceeding 700°C; however, prolonged use in high-temperature, sulfur-containing environments (such as those involving high-sulfur fuel gases) should be avoided. During welding, heat input must be carefully controlled to prevent cracking within the heat-affected zone.

Possible Alternative Grades
- For standard chemical pipelines subject to mild acid or alkali corrosion-such as clear water circulation lines and weak acid transport lines in chemical plants-316L stainless steel is a suitable choice, with a cost approximately 35% that of Incoloy 600.
- For extremely high-temperature applications-such as hot flue gas ducts and high-temperature oxidation furnaces-Inconel 601 is recommended; its maximum service temperature reaches 1150°C, exceeding that of Incoloy 600.
- For chemical pipelines handling hydrofluoric acid, Monel 400 is the preferred option; while its corrosion resistance surpasses that of Incoloy 600, its maximum service temperature is limited to 540°C, making it unsuitable for high-temperature operating conditions.
application areas
Specific applications of Inconel 600 seamless tubes in the chemical and petrochemical processing sectors include:
- Heat exchangers, condensers, and heat exchanger tube bundles-particularly in operating environments where there is a risk of stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride ions or circulating cooling water.
- Reactors and polymerization vessels used in the production of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride, offering resistance to catalyst corrosion.
- Evaporators and heaters are utilized in high-temperature, concentrated alkaline environments involving substances such as caustic soda, chloromethane, and phenol.
- Cracking furnace tubes and piping systems for catalytic reforming units.
- High-temperature chlorine gas processing equipment and chlorination apparatus.
- Distillation units, evaporation tanks, and alkaline pulping equipment.

FAQ
Q: What is the fundamental difference between Inconel 600 and standard stainless steels (304/316)?
A: The core difference lies in their resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and their high-temperature strength. Inconel 600 operates effectively at temperatures exceeding 700°C and exhibits virtually no SCC in chloride-containing environments, whereas stainless steels 304 and 316 are highly susceptible to cracking in chloride-bearing media at temperatures above 60°C.
Q: Can Inconel 600 seamless tubes be welded? Do they require any special processes?
A: Yes, they can. Inconel 600 possesses excellent weldability and can be joined using conventional processes such as TIG, MIG, and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). Typically, a matching filler metal (such as Inconel 82 or 182) is selected for the process.
Q: Is Inconel 600 pipe magnetic? Will they interfere with chemical testing instrumentation?
A: When supplied in the annealed condition, the finished products are completely non-magnetic; therefore, they will not interfere with precision testing instruments in chemical laboratories or with sensor equipment on automated production lines.
