Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a wrought nickel-copper-based alloy characterized by excellent resistance to corrosion in seawater and various chemical environments, as well as strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Due to its high nickel content, the Monel 400 alloy is capable of withstanding corrosion in anhydrous ammonia and ammoniated environments at temperatures below 585°C.
Monel 400 alloy (UNS N04400, 2.4360) is a single-phase solid-solution Ni-Cu alloy-primarily nickel-based-that demonstrates resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments and possesses good ductility.
Monel 400 alloy can be welded using various processes, including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and shielded Gas Metal Arc Welding methods.

Possible Alternative Grades
- For non-critical, mildly corrosive piping-such as auxiliary bilge lines on vessels or backup lines for small seawater lift pumps-316L stainless steel is a suitable choice, offering a cost savings of 40% to 50% compared to Monel 400.
- For medium-to-high-pressure piping on offshore platforms-such as general water transfer lines or cooling circuits in non-core areas-2205 duplex stainless steel is recommended, provided the seawater pressure does not exceed 10 MPa.
- For deep-sea environments and marine settings characterized by extreme corrosivity, titanium alloys are the preferred choice due to their superior corrosion resistance.
