ASTM A312 TP316L is an extra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel; solution annealing effectively prevents chromium carbide precipitation and eliminates the risk of intergranular corrosion following welding or hot working, allowing for direct use without post-weld heat treatment.
Manufactured using a seamless process with a thick-wall design, the Sa 312 316l Thick Wall Seamless Stainless Steel Tube withstands operating pressures exceeding 42 MPa, making it particularly suitable for high-pressure wellhead control lines, chemical injection, and instrumentation tubing.
Compared to 304/304L grades, 316L offers a service life more than three times longer in environments exposed to salt spray, seawater splash, and acidic crude oil, with an operating temperature range of -196°C to 450°C.
Customized Services
- TORICH offers customization for non-standard outer diameters and increased wall thicknesses, capable of producing ultra-thick-walled piping up to 80mm.
- To withstand the high-salinity, corrosive environments of offshore oil and gas platforms, we provide surface treatments such as enhanced pickling and passivation, mirror polishing, and matte sandblasting for corrosion resistance.
- We offer advanced processing services, including pipe end beveling, threading, flange welding, swaging, and flaring.
- Customized packaging options are available, including anti-rust oil, waterproof wrapping, wooden pallets, and anti-rust cartons.

Possible Alternative Grades
- For heat exchanger tubes and high-temperature refinery process lines, TP316Ti is an option; while slightly more expensive than 316L, it offers greater stability in welded, high-temperature systems, though it has lower resistance to seawater corrosion.
- Duplex stainless steel 2205 offers superior pitting resistance and higher yield strength compared to 316L; however, it costs over 40% more and exhibits poor low-temperature toughness and resistance to low-temperature corrosion.
- Alloy 625 provides superior resistance to chloride-ion corrosion and excellent high-temperature stability compared to 316L, making it suitable for high-temperature, corrosive process piping, although its cost is more than 8–10 times that of 316L.
applications
SA 312 TP316L heavy-wall seamless stainless steel pipes are widely used in upstream and downstream systems within the oil and gas industry.
- Offshore oil and gas production platforms: Seawater cooling systems, firewater piping systems, and produced water treatment piping systems.
- Subsea and offshore auxiliary systems: Protective conduits for subsea control lines and auxiliary piping systems for chemical injection.
- Oil refining process units: Distillation unit piping and cooling water circulation systems.
- Gas processing and compression stations: CO2 and wet gas processing systems and fuel gas distribution systems.

FAQ
Q: Does 316L pipe require heat treatment after welding?
A: No. 316L has a carbon content of ≤0.03%, eliminating the risk of intergranular corrosion. Post-weld solution annealing is unnecessary, significantly simplifying on-site oil and gas construction processes and reducing costs.
Q: Can 316L stainless steel be used in acidic environments containing hydrogen sulfide?
A: Yes, in mild sour service when compliant with NACE MR0175 requirements.
Q: What surface treatment options are available?
A: Pipes are supplied with a pickled and passivated surface (uniform silver-white). Bright annealing (BA grade), mechanical polishing to 400# or 600# finish, or temporary anti-rust coating as needed are available. For welded areas, pre-grooved beveling protection can also be specified.
